Heather Murphy, MA, LPC, joined Southwest Psychotherapy Associates in May 2014. She takes an individualized approach to therapy. Each person has their own vital, meaningful life, and Heather joins her clients on this journey. Using a warm, empathic approach coupled with a healthy and gentle dose of directness, she guides her clients in working through the areas of their lives that keep them stuck in their suffering. She works with individuals, couples and families to identify strengths and address issues in relationships so that they may be more fulfilling. She has experience treating a variety of issues and has helped people from all walks of life in a practical, life-changing manner. Heather enjoys working with adolescents as well. They often find her approachable and easy to open up to.
Heather specializes in treating eating disorders, body image, and self-esteem. She often incorporates creative exercises to help her clients express themselves in healthy, appropriate ways. Her work is influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Positive Psychology.
Heather earned her Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Houston at Clear Lake and completed a graduate internship at the Houston Eating Disorders Center. She did her undergraduate studies at the University of St. Thomas, completing internships at Crisis Intervention of Houston and MD Anderson. She also studied many religions and spiritual practices. Heather started in the mental health field at The Menninger Clinic on the Eating Disorders Program. She worked there for two years, where she also received training in leading groups. While completing her master's degree, Heather worked in a college educational setting.
After graduation, Heather worked at the Houston Eating Disorders Center as a Primary Therapist. She worked with individuals, families, couples, and led several groups. Heather conducted intakes to determine appropriate level of care and coordinated discharge plans. She created a group curriculum based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and played a significant role in developing programming as well as policies and procedures. As part of the treatment team, Heather collaborated with psychiatrists, physicians, psychologists, dietitians, and other mental health professionals on a daily basis.
In her free time, Heather enjoys traveling, learning about new cultures and spending time with her husband and son. She loves anything to do with the outdoors, including gardening, swimming, hiking, biking and being a beach bum.
